A very prescient look into the future, malicj well as being an exercise in telling a simple story with waylaid characters, “Badlands” is beyond captivating. If you’re looking to check out this guy’s work but you’re afraid badlwnds what you’ll think, I’d say this is a good starting point, since it’s pretty easy going and not nearly as alienating as his later stuff.
With the couple’s opaque dialogue and Holly’s fanzine dream narration, Malick further denies an easy explanation for their crimes. It is a lyrical and disturbing road movie produced by a filmmaker who, despite his inexperience, managed to craft one of the great films of the decade in this warped romantic adventure about two young lovers and their senseless killing spree across the Dakota badlands.

The sublime visuals lend a dreamlike beauty to the couple’s trip even as their actions are treated casually; Malick neither glamorizes Kit and Holly nor consigns them to the bloody end of their fame-fixated predecessors in Bonnie and Clyde They slowly fall in love, something about which she cannot tell her father because of their age difference and Kit coming from the wrong side of the tracks.

As a lyrical ballad, Badlands takes us along the road from South Dakota to the bandlands of the North of America. The music, like the visuals, is quite sublime and very catchy.
Goofs In one of her voice-overs, Holly refers to the “mountains of Saskatchewan”. Once bounty hunters discover their riverside hiding place, Kit and Holly head toward Saskatchewan, leaving dead bodies in their wake. Based on an actual young couple who went on a killing spree across the southwest in the late s, the story has two young people doing their own thing with precious little in the way of ethics to guide them. They are often difficult to navigate by foot. Although set in and explicitly coded as a period piece, Badlands felt deliberately and unshakably out-of-time, a nightmare recurring because the fear it incarnated was as livid now as it ever was.
As the movies goes on, Holly grows up and the enchanting vision of love she built around Kit comes to its fall when she realizes that the boy she once loved malic, a psychopath.
