Gladiator seemed to fit the bill. The language is old, but doesn’t bother when you read at all. The rags had been gray-green. For example, Hugo kills a bully at school with his superhuman strength, branding him an outsider for the rest of his life. It is certainly not a great book, but just as certain it is worth reading.

It is the story of someone with incredible gifts unable to find his place in the world, much as many people in the world were struggling with the Great Depression and the rise of fascism. Finally finding a friend in the scientist heading the expedition, Hugo reveals his gifts and origin to him. Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book. Alone, Hugo rips open the vault door, freeing the man. His father, Professor Abednego Danner, attempts to duplicate the strength displayed by small insects. Not only is he fired and threatened with arrest for the destruction of the vault, but he pilip taken away and ineffectually tortured.
