Anyway, for a twenty cent investment I figured I couldn’t go far wrong in selecting the trio of books that apparently made Kerr’s literary reputation.
His trilkgie, courage, and good luck win out, as Germany descends into brutality and war. In The Pale Criminal, most betlinoise the SS officers are either undisguised pedophiles who literally salivate and lose control around women or else openly homosexual with the apparent blessing of the Party despite the strict rules against this type of behavior.
I found the plots quite good and the feel for the time period too. The main reason I have only given these books 2 stars is this. L’amie de Madame Maigret Georges Simenon. Indeed, I sensed that he was not writing to his full potential, and that there were much berllnoise things in store for his readers.

The story reads hard boiled until the pot is dry and the soup is ruined. He might have done better to forego the language of Noir and to have stuck with the atmosphere and general aesthetic.

Once you are already familiar with the noir genre and Nazi-era Germany, the two books which follow March Violets can offer you no real new insight.
